Curator

In 1971, together with Heinrich Riebesehl, Kurt Julius, Karin Blüher, Peter Gauditz and others, Joachim Giesel founded one of Germany and Europe’s first non-commercial photo galleries in Hanover: the spectrum Photogalerie. The founders wished to introduce a broad public to the diverse ‘spectrum’ of possible uses and expressions of the medium of photography. Two years earlier, Riebesehl, Julius and Giesel had organized the exhibition Drei Photographen und ein Mädchen (Three Photographers and one Girl) at the Marktgalerie. The great interest that the photo exhibition met encouraged the three initiators in their idea of creating a permanent exhibition space for photography.

In the course of its twenty-year existence, spectrum presented four to six changing exhibitions per year, repeatedly in close cooperation with the Folkwang Photography Program, the Folkwang Museum Essen or, for example, the Institut Français.

Spectrum’s prelude was a unique retrospective of the work of photographer Hein Gorny, which led to the rediscovery of the photographer. In total, the gallery showed 88 exhibitions of contemporary photographers. The German photographic scene was represented for instance by a show of the work of photographer Umbo (Otto Umbehr), as well as other exhibitions on Hilla and Bernd Becher, André Gelpke, Barbara Klemm, August Sander, Michael Schmidt, Otto Steinert, among others.

Important international fashion photographs, isolated experimental works and social documentary exhibits by, for example, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Friedlander, Hideki Fujii, Raoul Hausmann, Nicholas Nixon, Irving Penn, Man Ray demonstrated the creative and socio-political possibilities of photography.

Giesel’s special achievement for Hanover can be seen in his work as a curator. Since spectrum Photogalerie was founded, he has been intensively involved in its curatorial direction for many years. The works of New York photographer Neal Slavin are one international example of Joachim Giesel’s commitment to portrait photography: Through Giesel’s efforts, Slavin’s work was exhibited in Hanover as early as April 1978.
Giesel himself participated in 1972 with a contribution in Gesichter – 17 Photographen aus Hannover (Faces – 17 Photographers from Hanover) at the spectrum gallery. In addition to his work for spectrum, Giesel curated an exhibition of Hanoverian photography for the Handwerksform in 1977 with Photographie in Hannover- Einflüsse, Auffassungen, Beispiele (Photography in Hanover – Influences, Perceptions, Examples), in which he was also represented. In 1991, he initiated the exhibition 750 Jahre Hannover. Blende auf – Hannover aus Moskauer Sicht (750 Years of Hanover. Open aperture – Hanover from Moscow’s point of view), in which four Russian photographers presented their views of Hanover in Germany. In the same year, Giesel travelled to Moscow and exhibited his view of the Russian capital in the exhibition hall of the State Art Fund together with three others.

Spectrum‘s efforts and work to raise the status of photography in society and as an art form have been continued at the Sprengel Museum Hannover since the gallery was taken over in 1992. Ulrike Schneider sums up: “The fact that the Sprengel Museum Hannover is today one of the few German art museums that continuously present photography as an art form in its own right is largely due to the commitment of Peter Gauditz, Joachim Giesel, Heinrich Riebesehlaswell as the many as well as the numerous other staff members of the Spectrum Photogallery” (Schneider 1995, S. 25).
